Kids shoe size conversion guide

Convert kids’ shoe sizes between EU, UK and US sizing and learn how to measure your child’s foot length at home.

Start with foot length, not the label

Children’s shoe sizes can be confusing because EU, UK and US systems use different numbers. A child may wear EU 30, UK 11.5 or US 12 depending on the brand and region.

Shoe size conversion charts are useful, but they are approximate. Different brands may use slightly different lasts, width assumptions and fit recommendations. The most reliable starting point is your child’s foot length.

How to measure your child’s feet

You need a sheet of paper, a pencil and a ruler or measuring tape. Measure later in the day if possible, because feet can expand slightly during the day.

  • Place the paper on a hard floor against a wall.
  • Ask your child to stand with their heel gently touching the wall.
  • Make sure they are standing with weight on the foot.
  • Mark the longest toe.
  • Measure from the wall edge to the mark.
  • Repeat with the other foot.
  • Use the longer foot as the basis for sizing.

Growing room and remeasuring

Children’s shoes should not be too tight, but they should not be so large that the foot slides around. Too much extra room can make walking, running and playing uncomfortable.

Remeasure before buying new shoes, before a new season and whenever your child complains about discomfort.

Frequently asked questions

Should I measure both feet?

Yes. Children often have one foot that is slightly longer. Use the longer foot when choosing a shoe size.

Are shoe size conversion charts exact?

No. EU, UK and US conversions vary by brand and shoe type. Foot length plus the brand’s own chart gives a better starting point.
